Childhood memories

It happened during the Spring break. My brother and I were in the countryside visiting my grandma. I do remember that her place was small, yet enough for us. With walls made of wood and sheet metal roof, you could listen to both the wind against it and each and every raindrop falling, like it was a serenely rhythmic melody.

Grandma opened the window to have a look on us, as we were playing in the backyard. Suddenly, the smell of wet grass and a delicious stew became mixed up. It is curious how smells become indelibly imprinted on our memory, and often, just a whiff of a previously encountered smell is enough to send the mind back to even the distant past and to evoke emotions which have lain dormant for years…

Although I remember myself standing up there with my eyes half closed contemplating the events, I was probably eating one big, juicy peach  which I might have taken, from one of the trees that surrounded the house.

When my brother saw the rainbow and noticed that it had stopped raining, we left our umbrellas aside and started laughing while hopping in the mud. When we tried to get back to the house , grandma's soft hands stopped us, reminding ourselves how dirty we were.

We definitely did not want to take a shower, so we stayed under the porch waiting for her to change her mind. All of a sudden , raindrops started falling on our tiny heads. We looked up and there was no cloud in the sky. It happened again. After getting very wet again , I recognized my grandmother's sweet laugh… We ended up having a shower, although not a warm one!
